User Guide of the Hazelnut Production Costing Tool
Hazelnut growers can use this tool to estimate their costs of production. This information by Oregon Tilth can be used to help growers better understand their cost structure and explore how changes to production practices, yields and price will impact net returns and long-term viability. The link to the tool is included in the guide.
Dragon Fruit Production
A highly productive small-scale agroforesty system can result in surplus food that can turn into monetary profits for growers thus improving livelihoods of producers and meet some of the demands of locally produced foods, leading to a benefit for local economies. The University of Guam developed a series of fact sheets for producers and ag professionals, including this one on dragon fruit. To download all fact sheets, see their project report projects.sare.org/project-reports/rgr20-003.
Enhancing Enterprise Diversification Assessment for Native American Farmers to Enhance Economic Sustainability
A needs assessment of Federally Recognized Tribal Extension (FRTEP) agents and Intertribal Agriculture Council (IAC) members rated financial management, business management, and evaluating new ideas for value-added enterprises very high. In response, Utah State University Extension provided training on enterprise assessment to FRTEP agents, IAC Technical Assistance Specialists, and non-profit organizations working in Indian Country. They created three publications: 10 Questions to Ask When Starting a Livestock Operation, Are You Ready to Start a Business on the Reservation?, and Questions To Ask When Starting A Home-Based Food Business. Scroll to end of project report to download copies of these publications.
Heritage Grains Guidebook
From 2016 through 2021, Rocky Mountain Seed Alliance worked with a grassroots network of nearly 200 grain growers in varying climates, initially across the Western United States and eventually growing nationally and globally, in trialing over 250 varieties of ancient and heritage grains including Indigenous and alternative (pseudo) grains to determine varieties that can thrive in the changing climate conditions of the 21st century. Results of both the participatory grassroots trials and the research trials, including grower and grain profiles, are documented in this manual in an effort to inform and inspire others to grow these unique varieties of grains, and to support regionalized grain networks and localized food systems.
Role of Birds on Farm: Self-Certification
This 10 lesson virtual course teaches agricultural professionals and farmers how to support beneficial birds and manage pest birds on farms. By learning how to assess the farm’s avian needs and opportunities, farms can be designed to provide for a diversity of beneficial birds. If pest birds are a problem, they can be discouraged with specific practices during the shorter periods when they cause damage. The sessions cover the latest research, tools and resources, and are given by experts in avian pest control, entomology, ornithology and conservation.
Food Safety & Conservation Co-Management
A guide for Hawaii farmers interested in improving their efforts towards food safety and improving natural resource conservation, through co-management practices. This document acts as a resource to both learn more about suitable techniques while reviewing pros and cons as shared by local producers, as well as provide template language and guidance towards implementing such work into a food safety plan. Download this guide and find related fact sheets.
Utah Vegetable Production & Pest Management Guide
Partially funded by Western SARE, the Utah Vegetable Production and Pest Management Guide is inclusive to all growers, whether commercial or hobbyist. Although content is specific to Utah, most content applies to the Intermountain West states. The book includes twelve chapters of specific production methods and comprehensive pest and treatment recommendations for crops representing brassicas, squash, cucurbits and melons, leafy greens, onion, potato, root crops, sweet corn, and tomato/pepper/eggplant. This publication is 284 pages and includes over 150 full-color images. Authors Nick Volesky, Utah State University and Marion Murray, Utah State University
